Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, BWV 846-893 Composing 48 keyboard pieces in all 24 keys was the sort of challenge Bach enjoyed. In each of the two parts of the Wohltemperirte Clavier, he brought together the musical couple prelude and fugue 24 times; twelve in minor keys and twelve in major. In the preludes, he gave free rein to his imagination.
The Fugue shows Bach mastery of the contrapuntal writing. It also exhibits his sense of proportions. This Fugue is architectural. The total number of the subjects is 14. He uses seven in the first half and seven in the second half of the piece. The first half of the Fugue has strong sense of the Tonic and Dominant keys and after that it modulates into D minor. The Second half goes into a climax.
Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 847, is a keyboard composition written by Johann Sebastian Bach.It is the second prelude and fugue in the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, a series of 48 preludes and fugues by the composer.
This work was probably written during Johann Sebastian Bach's service at Weimar (1708-1717), most likely in 1712. Sometime after 1740, Bach revised the piece. At one time, J.P. Kellner, an organist, copied out the work, adding the first 13 measures of the Andante from Bach's Organ Sonata No. 4 in E minor as a kind of an intermezzo between the prelude and fugue.
